The brief
Aluma's trusses and shoring legs didn't all work together out of the box. The fix was a single adaptor that could bridge multiple leg types instead of needing a different part for every combination.
What I did
- Started by measuring the actual equipment in the fleet, because the drawings and the steel in the yard don't always agree, and the adaptor had to fit what really exists.
- Built and iterated prototypes in SolidWorks until one design covered the different leg types.
- Produced the manufacturing drawings and worked directly with the manufacturer to quality-check the prototypes as they came back.
- Ran fit tests and structural tests to prove the connection held and was safe to put under a real load.
- Presented the findings to leadership, who signed off on adding the adaptor to the active fleet.
The interesting part
Drawing a part is one thing. Having it manufactured, tested, and trusted enough to go into the kit other engineers rely on is another. This one made it all the way: from a tape measure in the yard to a part that ships out on jobs.
